It is important to know your HIV status for you and your loved ones' health. With early detection, people living with HIV can live long, healthy lives. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 20 percent of people living with HIV are undiagnosed. The undiagnosed 20 percent are responsible for 70 percent of new HIV infections.

Protect Yourself with PrEP
PrEP stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis. Prophylaxis means to prevent or stop the spread of an infection. Since HIV is a virus, PrEP stops the virus before the person can be infected. In 2012 the FDA approved the use of a medicine called Truvada for PrEP. Truvada is currently the only form of PrEP approved in the United States. Taking Truvada daily greatly reduces the chance of getting infected with HIV.

Should I Get Tested?
Everyone, aged 13-64, should get tested at least once in their life. Annual testing is recommended if you meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Sex (vaginal, oral or anal) with multiple sex partners
- Sex with someone who is HIV positive or whose HIV status you don't know
- Sex between a man and another man
- Using illegal injected drugs or steroids
- Shared needles or syringes
- Exchanging sex for money
- A diagnosis or treatment for hepatitis, tuberculosis or a sexually transmitted disease like syphilis
Not having health insurance should not stop someone getting tested. The above list links to details about free HIV tests offered at numerous locations in and around Cleveland. If someone happens to test positive, resources exist that can help them pay for their care.
