Should I Get Tested?

Every sexually active person should get tested at least once in their life. Annual testing is recommended if you meet at least one of the following criteria:

Condomless Sex (vaginal, oral or anal) with multiple sex partners
Condomless Sex with someone who is HIV positive or whose HIV status you don't know
Shared needles or syringes
Exchanging sex for money
A diagnosis or treatment for hepatitis, tuberculosis or a sexually transmitted disease like syphilis

Not having health insurance should not stop someone from getting tested. If someone happens to test positive, resources exist that can help them pay for care.

Protect Yourself with PrEP

PrEP stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis. Prophylaxis means to prevent or stop the spread of an infection. Since HIV is a virus, PrEP stops the virus before the person can be infected. In 2012 the FDA approved the use of a medicine called Truvada for PrEP. Truvada is currently the only form of PrEP approved in the United States. Taking Truvada daily greatly reduces the chance of getting infected with HIV.
