Gastroenterology Clinics and Testing

MetroHealth offers specialty clinics and comprehensive testing for complex gastrointestinal conditions, with innovative treatments.

GI Diagnosis and Motility Laboratory

We offer many tests that help us determine the acidity of your digestive system.

We also determine if you have a bacterial infection in your small bowel, lactose intolerance or fructose malabsorption. We also evaluate for iron deficiency anemia, anal sphincter disorders, severity of liver disease and other function abnormalities of the GI tract.

With these test results, we create a treatment plan that might include medications and other therapeutic approaches, such as:

  • ARM (anorectal manometry)
  • Breath test for Helicobacter pylori detection
  • Capsule endoscopy
  • EndoFLIP
  • Esophageal manometry
  • Fibroscan
  • Glucose, lactose and fructose breath tests
  • Musocal impedence
  • Smartpill
  • Wireless pH capsule monitoring

Esophageal and Swallowing Center

If you have an esophageal or swallowing problem, this clinic focuses on the following conditions:

  • Achalasia
  • Barrett's esophagus
  • Esophageal chest pain
  • Esophageal dysmobility
  • Eosinophilic esophagitis
  • GERD
  • Swallowing problems

We use imaging and motility tests to spot abnormalities in your esophagus, and work with surgery teams, neurology teams and other MetroHealth departments to address those concerns and get you feeling better.

Hepatitis C and Liver Clinic

Chronic hepatitis B and C, along with other conditions that impact the liver, are treated in this clinic. We help monitor your disease through imaging studies and lab tests, and offer you therapies that make living with these conditions a little easier. We help you amend your diet, choose the right medications, and keep your vaccines up-to-date. We also offer research studies on these conditions, so you might get therapies at MetroHealth that you can't get elsewhere.

Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis Clinic

When an imaging test indicates that you have fatty liver disease, or when you have abnormal liver function tests and a history of diabetes, glucose intolerance, hypertension or hyperlipidemia, this clinic can help.

We evaluate the cause of your liver disease using innovative testing, such as transient elastography via Fibroscan. With the results of those tests, we create a treatment plan that might involve medications, diet changes, weight loss or lifestyle alterations. We help you in the clinic, and refer you to other specialists in The MetroHealth System, as needed.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinic

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are the focus of this clinic. We provide medical, surgical and endoscopic treatments for these very serious conditions. We use a team approach in our clinic, and often connect patients with other departments within the MetroHealth System.

Nutrition Clinic

Illnesses such as inflammatory bowel disease, chronic pancreatitis, celiac disease and gastroparesis can impede your body's ability to absorb key nutrients. If your doctor says that you're struggling with a nutritional deficiency, visit our Nutrition Clinic. We offer the following support:

  • Dietary counseling to help you understand how to alter your diet in response to your medical condition.
  • Nutritional supplements your body needs, including administering vitamins and minerals via injection.
  • If a feeding tube is necessary, we provide parenteral nutrition or enteral feedings.
