Trauma Care, Closer to Home

Trauma care got a little closer to home for residents and workers in Parma and surrounding communities when MetroHealth Parma Medical Center officially became a provisional Level III Adult Trauma Center, effective October 5, 2020.

Parma’s dense population coupled with MetroHealth’s trauma expertise and MetroHealth Parma Medical Center’s capabilities in emergency, surgical and inpatient care were all contributing factors for seeking Level III Adult Trauma Center designation from the American College of Surgeons.

"We know that speed and experience matter when it comes to caring for people who have suffered a traumatic injury,” said Bernie Boulanger MD, Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer. “Based on the number of residents and businesses in the immediate area and surrounding community, the Parma facility is a prime location for a trauma center. As a Level III Adult Trauma Center, we will be able to reach more people, faster when they need us most.”

Providing Trauma Care for Decades

“We have been providing trauma care to patients who live in and near Parma for decades,” said Jeff Claridge, MD, Trauma Medical Director. “We are happy and honored to be able to bring trauma and emergency surgical services closer to where they work, live, and play, “

To receive a Level III Adult Trauma Center designation, a health care institution must be able to provide "prompt assessment, resuscitation, surgery, intensive care and stabilization of injured patients and emergency operations." Level III Adult Trauma Centers include 24-hour immediate coverage by emergency medicine physicians and the prompt availability of general surgeons and anesthesiologists.

MetroHealth is one of the first and longest serving Adult Trauma Centers in the region, MetroHealth’s trauma team is nationally known for their skill and teamwork in providing life-saving medical care. That same level of expertise is now available at the Parma Medical Center with Level I Adult Trauma trained dual boarded surgeons/intensivists from MetroHealth’s Main Medical Campus, who will be providing full trauma coverage at MetroHealth Parma.

The MetroHealth Medical Center is NE Ohio's leading Level I Adult and Level II Pediatric Trauma Center.
