SUMMARY

Dr. Bolen is a Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), the Founding Director for the MetroHealth Population Health Research Institute, Director of the CWRU Center for Health Care Research and Policy, and a practicing general internist. Her research is focused on cardiovascular risk reduction.

She uses mixed methods, implementation science, and systematic reviews to better understand and improve cardiovascular health among primarily disadvantaged populations.  In conjunction with the Johns Hopkins Evidence-based Practice Center, Dr. Bolen has led and participated in several multidisciplinary teams conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses around patient-centered cardiovascular health outcomes which led to several publications in Annals of Internal Medicine, national and international presentations, and translational products such as Consumer Union Best Buy Reports.

As the Director of Cardiovascular Disease Programs for a non-profit regional health improvement collaborative called Better Health Partnership, she also leads quality improvement initiatives improving blood pressure management in the region and across the state. With CWRU, she co-leads a Medicaid-funded statewide cardiovascular health collaborative (Cardi-OH) focused on expanding primary care team capacity to manage cardiovascular disease in Medicaid patients.  Recently, she was funded to co-lead a statewide diabetes collaborative and quality improvement project by Ohio Department of Medicaid. These successful efforts have brought her to national attention where she was invited recently to serve on the CDC Hypertension Roundtable to share her successes and disseminate best practices for hypertension control.

She also serves on the Department of Health and Human Services National Clinical Care Commission, where she was chosen as one of 13 non-federal committee members to evaluate and provide recommendations on the coordination and leveraging of federal programs related to complex metabolic or autoimmune diseases that result from insulin-related issues and represent a significant disease burden in the United States, including complications due to such diseases.

Dr. Bolen co-founded The MetroHealth System’s Clinical Practice Guideline Committee involved in overseeing development and implementation of guidelines into quality improvement efforts, and also implements and evaluates ways to link clinics to community resources for social needs as a mechanism to address disparities. Dr. Bolen works closely with The MetroHealth System’s Population Health Innovation’s Institute to ensure that research and operations within MetroHealth are closely aligned.
