Our oncology surgeons have the extensive training and advanced technology to manage your surgical care. They'll collaborate with the rest of your cancer team to ensure that your procedure works in tandem with your other therapies to fight your cancer as effectively as possible.
When you come to MetroHealth for cancer treatment, you'll be offered the full spectrum of advanced surgical techniques in a multidisciplinary setting. And your treatment will be performed by highly trained, caring surgeons.
There are many factors that go into determining what type of surgery will be used to treat your cancer. Your oncology team will look at where your tumor is located, whether your cancer has spread and other aspects of your health before deciding on the best type of surgery for you.
Depending on these factors, your doctors may recommend one of the advanced, minimally invasive surgical techniques that we offer here at MetroHealth. These include:
Undergoing cancer surgery at MetroHealth means that you'll be under the care of some of the region's top physicians. Their expertise goes far beyond the operating room. All of our cancer surgeons are also trained in other cancer disciplines, including medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, cancer genetics and research. That means that your surgeon is able to see the full picture of your cancer care, and your surgeon can manage your surgery in the way that works best for your overall health.
MetroHealth's surgeons understand that cancer surgery isn't only about medical innovation and expertise. It's also about people. We understand that having surgery for cancer can be an emotional experience for you and your loved ones. We'll always treat you with individualized attention, do everything we can to make you feel comfortable and take the time to answer all of your questions.
Cancer surgery may be used to remove your tumor. Afterward, your oncologist may recommend other options in addition to surgery. Sometimes, chemotherapy or radiation therapy is used to shrink a tumor before it's removed in a surgery. Other times, a cancer surgeon may remove a tumor first, and chemo and radiation may be used afterward to reduce the risk of the cancer's coming back.
The course of treatment that's right for you will depend on your type of cancer, as well as the stage of your cancer and the size of your tumor. Your case may be discussed at one of our multidisciplinary tumor boards. They may include physicians from many specialties, such as cancer surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, gastrointestinal disease and others. The group will discuss and determine the most effective and safest treatment plan for you. We'll also connect you with our cancer navigators, who can provide you with even more information about how your treatment will work and what you can expect.
No matter your course of treatment, you can rest assured that at MetroHealth, you'll always receive the best possible care.
