As we get older, it’s common for the skin on our eyelids to sag or droop. The eyelid has the thinnest skin on the body, and over time, aging and gravity can cause it to stretch and droop. There’s no reason to feel embarrassed. It’s a normal part of getting older.
The good news is that an eyelid lift can help. This simple procedure removes extra skin from the eyelids. While some people choose it to improve their appearance, it can also be medically necessary. Drooping eyelids can block side vision and make everyday activities like driving, reading and watching TV more difficult.
Many people don’t realize how much their eyelids are affecting their vision. After surgery, patients often say they can see more clearly and feel like they have a wider view of the world. If drooping eyelids are affecting your daily life, talk with your doctor to see if an eyelid lift may be right for you.
An Uplifting Surgery
An eyelid lift, also called blepharoplasty, is a common outpatient procedure that usually takes about an hour. It can be done in a doctor’s office or an operating room. Most people have both eyelids treated at the same time so they look even. The surgeon makes small cuts in the natural folds of the eyelids and removes extra skin or tissue. These cuts are placed carefully to help reduce visible scarring.
After surgery, it’s normal to have some swelling and bruising around your eyes. Using ice packs and following your doctor’s instructions can help with healing. Most people recover within two to three weeks. Pain is usually mild and is often greatest during the first day or two. Over-the-counter pain medicine, such as acetaminophen, is often enough to manage discomfort.
Is an Eye Lift Right for You?
Ophthalmologists use visual field tests to see if drooping eyelids are limiting your side vision. If lifting the eyelids improves vision, test results and eyelid photos can be submitted to your insurance company to support coverage.
