Ingredients
- 4 cups peeled and sliced tart apples (about 4 medium apples)
- 1 to 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 2 to 4 tablespoons sugar (depending on how sweet the apples are)
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 6 to 8 tablespoons melted butter or margarine
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
- 1/3 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
Directions
- Heat the oven to 375°F.
- Place the sliced apples in a greased 8 x 8-inch baking dish.
- Sprinkle the lemon juice over the apples.
- In a bowl, mix the oats, brown sugar, flour, butter, cinnamon and salt until crumbly. Stir in walnuts if using.
- Sprinkle the oat mixture evenly over the apples.
- Bake for about 30 minutes, or until the apples are soft and the topping is golden brown.
- Serve warm. Top with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream if desired.
Helpful Tip
A mix of tart and sweet apples can add great flavor. Good choices include Honeycrisp, Fuji, Gala, Granny Smith and Golden Delicious.
