U.S. News Ranks MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute Among America’s Best

U.S. News & World Report has once again ranked the MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute among the nation’s best rehabilitation hospitals for the care of patients recovering from complex conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury.

This year, MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute ranked No. 34 nationally and No. 3 in Ohio, placing the Institute among the country’s leading rehabilitation programs.

The MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute provides comprehensive rehabilitation services at its Old Brooklyn Medical Center, including specialized units for stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury and major trauma rehabilitation. These services complement MetroHealth’s role as the region’s leading Level I Adult Trauma Center, ensuring seamless care from acute treatment through rehabilitation and recovery.

Recent innovations include:

• In March, MetroHealth surgeons performed the first-ever implantation of the KeyGrip system, which is designed to activate paralyzed hand muscles and restore a person’s ability to grasp. The procedure marked a major milestone for the device developed under the leadership of Megan Moynahan, MS, chief architect of KeyGrip and principal investigator of a clinical trial that began enrolling patients in 2025.
• MetroHealth is among the first rehabilitation providers in Ohio to use the ARC-EX System, a transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation device developed by Onward Medical to improve arm and hand function in people with spinal cord injuries. MetroHealth is one of approximately 110 clinics worldwide offering the technology.
• MetroHealth recently introduced the Synchrony® System, developed by Synapse Biomedical Inc. It is the first commercial device to deliver contralaterally controlled functional electrical stimulation (CCFES) therapy, an innovation developed by MetroHealth researchers Jayme Knutson, PhD, and John Chae, MD.

Beyond its nationally recognized rehabilitation program, MetroHealth was also recently rated High Performing by U.S. News for care related to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes, heart arrhythmia, heart failure, kidney failure, lung cancer surgery, pacemaker implantation and pneumonia.
