MetroHealth (formerly the Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital) has an illustrious clinical neuroscience history spanning more than a half century and featuring legendary figures like Maurice Victor, MD (neurology), Betty Banker, MD (neuropathology), and Robert White, MD, PhD (neurosurgery). Dr. Victor was the founding director of the Department of Neurology.
Our contemporary mission to improve the lives of our community by providing excellent neurologic care and advancing clinical neurosciences is these pioneers’ legacy.
The MetroHealth Department of Neurology team, composed of physicians, nurse practitioners, a clinical practice coordinator, nurses, technologists, and patient support staff, is dedicated to the care of patients with a wide range of chronic and acute neurologic conditions.

We work collaboratively with our patients and our colleagues in Emergency Medicine, Radiology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Primary Care, Family Practice, and the Medical and Surgical specialties to bring excellent clinical care to our patients.

MetroHealth / Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine Affiliation
As a major teaching hospital in Northern Ohio, MetroHealth has maintained a tradition of excellence in academics and research. Intensive training for physicians and medical professionals is offered in neurological surgical specialties.
MetroHealth's Department of Neurology provides Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine students with the chance to learn and practice in multiple clinical settings. The curriculum offered in the Neurology program is viewed as an extension of the CWRU's academic and research expertise.
All of our active staff physicians hold faculty appointments at CWRU School of Medicine.
Our researchers work with CWRU in key areas of scientific discovery and biomedical technology.
In the last year, we trained:
- 1,200 medical students and nurse practitioner, physician assistant, anesthesia assistant, bioethic, podiatry and informatics students
- 600 residents/fellows rotating from other institutions
- 395 MetroHealth residents/fellows
