Dr. Piktel is a Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the MetroHealth Medical Center and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine.

His research focuses on implementation of novel therapies in order to improve resuscitation outcomes by understanding the complex derangements during myocardial and neurological ischemia and resuscitation from cardiac arrest.

His works have provided insights into designing a novel readily translatable model of resuscitation with the capability of determining not only arrhythmia mechanisms during resuscitation from cardiac arrest, but long-term neurologic outcomes. He has been awarded funding from the National Institute of Health, Department of Defense, and Clinical Translational Science Collaborative.  

Dr. Piktel is a member of the Research Committee of the American College of Emergency Physicians and is currently a member of the Scientific Review Committee. He is the Primary Investigator for the MetroHealth SIREN site. He is continuing his pursuit of novel improvement in resuscitation therapies in the prehospital setting, and using informatics as a tool to identify patients at risk for adverse outcomes from the emergency department.
