Car crashes, falls and sports collisions are some of the ways traumatic bone, muscle or joint injuries occur. Should one of these injuries happen to you, know that the orthopedic trauma experts at The MetroHealth System have the skills to manage complex musculoskeletal injuries and guide you to recovery.

Whether you need immediate treatment or have lingering issues from a recent injury like a broken bone, our expertise is a key reason to feel confident in our orthopedic trauma team.

All of our board-certified surgeons are fellowship-trained in orthopedic trauma and have additional subspecialty interests and skills—from spinal cord injuries to upper and lower extremities. Every orthopedic trauma surgeon on our team actively contributes to research in collaboration with medical students and residents, whether through independent projects or multicenter studies. This helps keep them at the cutting edge of innovative trauma care techniques.

As a Level I Adult Trauma Center and a Level II Pediatric Trauma Center, we treat the full range of orthopedic injuries, including:

  • Long bone fractures, fractures around joints, nonhealing fractures, deformed fractures, and pelvic and hip fractures.
  • Penetrating trauma
  • Ligament knee injuries (often treated in coordination with a sports medicine surgeon).

Patients at MetroHealth benefit from a team-based, comprehensive approach to orthopedic trauma care.

Our experts frequently review complex cases together to consider the multiple ways an injury can be treated. When deciding on the best treatment plan, they consider the whole picture of what the patient needs for their recovery and return to activities.

Treating orthopedic injuries can require collaboration with experts from various specialties, like plastic surgery, neurosurgery, spine surgery and rehabilitation. MetroHealth’s long history and legacy of trauma care has allowed the orthopedic team to develop robust systems for working closely with these different specialties. That sets us apart in our ability to provide comprehensive, team-based trauma care and better outcomes.

Nonsurgical treatments can be an option for a range of injuries—from simple ankle fractures to more complicated injuries. Our team will explore these options with you whenever possible.

The goal is to find the best way to address the injury without complications. We evaluate each person’s injury individually to determine the best approach.

When surgery is the best approach for your injury, you’ll benefit from being at the region’s most experienced Level I trauma center. Our team will swiftly design a plan to deliver the best treatment possible for your situation. They have the skills to offer you the latest advancements in orthopedic trauma surgery, if that’s what you need to begin your recovery.

Our orthopedic surgeons have deep knowledge of surgical techniques and methods to treat orthopedic trauma and address complications.

Our goal is to help you return to your pre-injury function, and we tailor the surgical approach based on your needs and circumstances.

Access to our nationally renowned Rehabilitation Institute is also a key part of recovery. If necessaary, we offer inpatient and outpatient rehab based on a person’s needs.
