Kelley Tomaro: Compassion When It Matters Most

Some of the most powerful moments in healthcare don’t happen under bright lights or in dramatic breakthroughs. They happen quietly – between a nurse and a patient – when compassion matters just as much as clinical skill.
That’s where Kelley Tomaro, BSN, RN, OCN, Nurse Manager in Cancer Care, has spent nearly 17 years of her career at MetroHealth.
Long before Kelley ever stepped into a hospital professionally, she was already caring for others. As a child, she helped support family members during times of illness, witnessing firsthand how overwhelming and frightening those moments can be.
“Being present, offering comfort, helping in even small ways – those moments showed me the impact compassion can have,” Kelley says.
That early calling continues to guide her work today.
As a nurse manager, Kelley leads and supports a team caring for patients facing some of the most difficult diagnoses of their lives. She advocates for her nurses, fosters an environment where caregivers feel respected and supported and ensures every patient is met with clarity, dignity and compassion.
Kelley understands that when caregivers are cared for, patients experience the best possible outcomes.
She also sees the impact of donor support every single day.
“Your generosity is felt in the moments when patients are most vulnerable,” Kelley shared. “Because of you, patients facing overwhelming diagnoses are met not just with treatment, but with time, compassion and resources that ease fear and give back dignity. Every donation becomes a quiet but powerful part of a patient’s story of hope and healing.”
Those stories are often defined by relief – by the moment a patient realizes they are not alone.
Kelley says her favorite memories aren’t single milestones, but the countless times she’s watched fear soften into trust. “That trust, built through presence and compassion, is everything,” she says.
