Program Information
Clinical Practice Rotations
The resident completes clinical rotations in specialized neurologic units throughout the continuum of care. Residents will primarily serve patients with diagnoses of spinal cord injury, stroke, brain injury, and other neurological conditions.
- Acute Care: includes neurocritical care, trauma intensive care, acute comprehensive stroke care units
- Inpatient Rehabilitation: includes designated TBI, SCI and stroke units
Outpatient Neurologic-specific clinic - Clinical practice accounts for approximately 32 hours of resident weekly schedule.
Focused Mentoring
Residents will be assigned a mentor in each rotation. Mentors provide feedback, facilitate resident self-reflection, and guide the resident in the pursuit of advanced clinical reasoning skills. Each mentor has specialized experience and continuing education in their specific practice area/interest.
1:1 mentoring occurs throughout the program, on average 3 hours per week.
Didactic Education
Comprehensive curriculum developed based upon Neurologic Description of Residency Practice and NCS exam components.
Educational/research/teaching opportunities account for approximately 8 hours per week and may include:
- Lecture/Lab, hands-on activities/instruction
- MedBridge NCS Prep Program
- Independent learning/assignments
- Specialty observations
- Attendance to a national conference
- Assisting at regional DPT program
- Research
- Clinical research project with support from MH research department and research coordinator
- Observation within clinical research department
- EBP In-services to staff
- Monthly Inter-Residency Journal Club
- Service/volunteer opportunities

ABPTRFE Requirements
The MetroHealth Neurologic PT Residency adheres to the Quality Standards set forth by the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE) for the development and continuous improvement of the program.

Per ABPTRFE, residency programs require participants to complete a minimum of 1,800 total program hours, including 300 educational hours and 1,500 patient-care clinic hours inclusive of 150 hours of 1:1 mentoring throughout the program.
MetroHealth Residency Structure
- Each cohort includes up to 2 residents
- Full time 12-month program, starting in July
- Employment through the MetroHealth System for the duration of residency year with health benefits, paid time off and reimbursement for up to $2500 for continuing education
- Clinical education with direct patient care ~32 hours per week, including one-on-one clinical mentorship ~3-4 hours per week.
- Didactic education ~8 hours per week, including unique clinical observations, service opportunities, teaching experiences in local DPT programs, and research involvement.
- Other program expectations include self-study, web-based learning modules, journal club, and ongoing residency projects.
