Most adults need at least seven hours of sleep each night to stay healthy, according to John Carter, MD, a neurosomnologist and Director of the MetroHealth Center for Sleep Medicine. Sleep helps every part of your body work the way it should, including your heart, brain and metabolism.
Sleep and Your Heart
While you sleep, your heart rate and blood pressure naturally go down. If you do not get enough sleep, your blood pressure can stay higher over time. This can raise your risk for heart disease, heart attack and stroke.
Sleep apnea, a condition that causes pauses in breathing during sleep, can also increase the risk of heart problems. Talk to your doctor if you snore loudly, wake up tired or think you may have sleep apnea.
Sleep and Your Brain
Your brain needs sleep to recharge. Without enough rest, it can be harder to focus, learn and remember things. Lack of sleep can also affect your mood and may leave you feeling irritable, anxious or down.
Sleep and Weight
Sleep helps your body use energy from food. When you do not get enough sleep, your body releases hormones that can make you feel hungrier and crave less healthy foods. Over time, poor sleep can make it harder to maintain a healthy weight.
Tips for Better Sleep
Try these healthy sleep habits:
- Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.
- Keep your bedroom cool, dark and quiet.
- Turn off phones, tablets and TVs at least two hours before bedtime.
- Avoid caffeine later in the day.
- Eat lighter meals in the evening.
- Skip alcohol before bed.
- Drink less fluid close to bedtime to avoid nighttime bathroom trips.
Getting enough sleep is one of the best things you can do for your overall health. Small changes to your routine can help you get the rest your body and mind need.
