- Tobacco Use Facts vs. Myths
Myth #1: There is no evidence that “chew” is dangerous.
Fact: It may take only a few months to develop white sores in the mouth, which can turn into cancer.
Myth #2: Brushing your teeth after using chew lessens the damage.
Fact: “Chew” can cause oral health disease which could lead to cancer of the cheek, tongue, and mouth. There is no evidence that enough dental care can offset the negative effects that smokeless tobacco has on gums and teeth.
Myth #3: Chew is safer than cigarettes.
Fact: It doesn’t take a lot to become addicted to “chew” – even if used occasionally. It contains more nicotine than cigarettes and more cancer-causing agents.
Myth #4: It’s too late to quit – the damage is already done.
Fact: The longer use of tobacco, the more damage is done to the body. The body begins to heal after quitting.
