Common Causes

Alcohol and tobacco use, including secondhand smoke and smokeless tobacco (sometimes called “chewing tobacco” or “snuff”), are the greatest risk factors in developing these cancers. Talk to your doctor about ways to stop using tobacco/alcohol to reduce your risk.

While tobacco and alcohol play a role in the development of these cancers, HPV infection plays an important role in cancer of the throat (pharynx) or tonsil cancer.

This can be prevented by receiving the HPV vaccine from your doctor.
