Patient Care at the Rehabilitation Institute

Do you have a loved one who is recovering from a stroke, spinal cord or brain injury, a trauma or an orthopedic condition? Thanks to the MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute, they don't have to travel far to receive expert therapy services.

Watch our video to find out why our Rehabilitation Institute can help patients achieve the best possible outcomes.

"We are a rehab hospital that takes care of patients with a greater severity of illness than other institutions. Our patients are sicker when they arrive, yet we still achieve as good or better functional outcomes," says Richard Wilson, MD, Director, Division of Neurologic Rehabilitation.

Our inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services cover several areas, including:

  • Specialty Physician Care
  • Physical Therapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Speech Therapy
  • Rehabilitation Psychology
  • Recreational Therapy
  • Vocational Rehabilitation
  • Art and Music Therapy
  • Driver Rehabilitation
  • Personalized Nutrition Therapy
  • Support Groups

The Rehab Institute team takes a collaborative approach to care, covering medical, physical and psychological needs. And patients are equal partners in the overall care plan. "We focus on their goals, such as getting back to their job or school, or a certain hobby or milestone like attending a child's wedding. We want them to be able to do the things they want to do or enjoy," says Dr. Wilson. And that care can be ongoing. "We'll keep working with someone as long as they still have goals they want to meet."

In addition to patients and the care team, the needs of family members are addressed too. That's because "someone's situation can affect the whole family, whether it's a spouse, the children or the parents," explains Dr. Wilson.

Although our Rehab Institute was one of the first in the United States, our team is constantly looking toward the future of rehabilitation care. Education and research are important components of what we do. Our team trains the next generation of rehabilitation providers, our institute is one of the largest recipients of National Institutes of Health funding, and we're the global leader in development of Functional Electrical Stimulation, which is used to help many patients who are paralyzed.

"We are very much committed to changing the world," says John Chae, MD, Vice President of Research and Chair of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. "We change the world by doing innovation that becomes the standard of practice."
