Many people are referred to us by their physicians, social workers or therapists. However, you don't need a referral.

Our History of Care

The Benjamin S. Gerson Family Resource Center was dedicated in 2004, thanks to the generosity of Mr. Gerson's children. Mr. Gerson was diagnosed with polio in 1953, and received care at MetroHealth Medical Center. He felt this care allowed him to return to a productive life after his diagnosis, and his children chose to honor his recovery by opening the center.

Here, we help people like Mr. Gerson who have experienced a life-altering illness or trauma. We keep track of educational information, support services and community agencies that provide disability services in greater Cleveland. Then, we connect people with the information they need to make positive changes.

Personalized Disability Services

The Benjamin S. Gerson Family Resource Center serves individuals and their families. We often work with people who have spinal cord injury, stroke, brain injury and orthopedic disabilities.

Our certified rehabilitation counselor meets with you and your family for an initial needs assessment. That conversation helps us determine what resources might be helpful for you. Then, we make referrals to resources to assist with issues such as:

  • Home health aides and respite care
  • Housing and transportation
  • Medical equipment
  • Mental health and substance abuse treatment
  • Preventive care
  • Recreation and wellness
  • Support groups
  • Vocational services

At the Benjamin S. Gerson Family Resource Center, one of our main goals is to connect you and your family with the organizations and contacts that assist with benefits applications. We connect you with the benefits enrollment team at MetroHealth Medical Center and help you get in touch with other community resources that might help. We also serve as an advocate to help navigate complex administrative systems.
