Faculty from MetroHealth, The Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals Case Medical Center, and The Ohio State University are pleased to bring this introductory course in Critical Care Ultrasonography to the incoming fellows in Critical Care. This course serves to familiarize learners with the applications of point of care ultrasonography (POCUS) in clinical practice.

Program Description

This course delivers 12 hours of learning time that includes didactics, image review, and hands-on learning over the span of two days. Modules covered in this course include vascular, thoracic, abdominal, and cardiac ultrasound. Lecture time of 4 hours is complemented by 4 hours of image review and 4 hours of hands-on image acquisition with a learner to instructor ratio of 3:1. Learning is evaluated by deliberate skill assessment and individualized feedback from faculty experts in the field.


Program Goals

To become familiar with the basic principles and applications of POCUS through focused didactics, image interpretation, guided hands-on image acquisition, and targeted coaching.


Learning Objectives

  • Discuss physics and anatomy knowledge base required to perform POCUS.
  • Incorporate interpretation skills required for POCUS.
  • List appropriate uses of ultrasonography in pulmonary and critical care practices.
  • Demonstrate appropriate image acquisition skill needed in POCUS.
  • Interpret normal and abnormal image cases in multiple scanning domains.
