My lab focuses on a identifying novel antiarrhythmic approaches to improve resuscitation from sudden cardiac arrest. Our group has had a longstanding interest in basic mechanisms of arrhythmias that cause sudden cardiac death and represents a longstanding collaboration between emergency medicine and basic cardiology, with significant accumulated expertise. We have focused on arrhythmias relevant to emergency care in a number of diseases including heart failure, drug-induced proarrhythmia, hypothermia, and ischemia/reperfusion. After completing my emergency medicine training at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Cleveland, OH, I established an independent lab there, initially focusing on cardiovascular toxicology. After joining the faculty at MetroHealth Medical Center in 1999, I combined my expertise in large animal models with state of the art electrophysiological techniques to develop our current models of hypothermia and resuscitation, which we now use to study a wide range of diseases associated with sudden cardiac death relevant to emergency care. Our group has significant expertise in the fundamental basis of cardiac arrhythmias, taking a “bench to bedside approach,” bridging the molecular, cellular, and whole heart mechanisms to in vivo platforms in order to determine novel approaches to prevent sudden death. The strong, ongoing, productive collaboration between emergency medicine, emergency medical services, basic and clinical cardiology, and others offers a unique environment that is ideally suited to investigate both mechanisms and novel antiarrhythmic interventions. As an emergency physician, with active involvement in our institution’s clinical care of cardiac arrest patients, our targeted temperature management program, and CPR and Code STEMI efforts, I am uniquely positioned to translate our laboratory work into clinical applications. In sum, I am an active emergency medicine physician who has developed and devoted his research efforts to address basic mechanisms and therapies for acute cardiac arrhythmias. To this end, we have assembled a strong collaborative group to achieve our goals of improving our current approach to arrhythmias, resuscitation, and post-resuscitation care.
