No one plans to need inpatient rehabilitation. But when you do, it’s important that you choose the right facility. At the MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute, we understand that your illness or injury is not normal to you. It is, however, familiar to us. In addition to providing general rehabilitation treatment, MetroHealth has specialized units for stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury and major trauma rehabilitation—making us the place you want to be as you begin your path to recovery. With our unique combination of world-class professionals and innovative technology, we have been one of the best rehabilitation facilities for more than 65 years now.
Conditions We Treat
Therapy treatments are available for, but not limited to, the following conditions:
- Amputation
- Brain injury
- Burns
- Cardiopulmonary disease (pneumonia, Congestive Heart Failure or COPD), ventilator dependency or prolonged ICU course
- Complex knee or hip replacement (bilateral, obese, elderly, other medical complexities)
- Congenital deformity
- Hip or femur fracture
- Medically complex conditions
- Multiple trauma
- Myopathy
- Neurological disorders – e.g. Multiple Sclerosis, Guillain-Barre Syndrome,
- Myasthenia Gravis, Parkinsonism, Polyneuropathy, Demyelinating Diseases and Muscular Dystrophy (new diagnosis, exacerbation or change in function)
- Post-operative recovery (e.g. tumor excision, intracranial shunt, intrathecal baclofen pump, laminectomy)
- Severe or advanced osteoarthritis
- Spinal cord injury
- Stroke
Our Care Team
When you choose the MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute for your care, you will be seen five to six times a week by a physiatrist who is board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation. In fact, MetroHealth offers one-on-one rehabilitation hours to each patient at a higher rate than the national average. We also have a physician onsite 24 hours a day.

Physiatrist (Attending physician)
Directs your care; specializes in the rehabilitation of disorders of the spine, brain, muscles and bones
Rehabilitation psychologist
Helps you cope with and adjust to your condition or injury by teaching you skills to manage feelings like sadness, loss and worry
Social worker & case manager
Provides information about community resources, helps with discharge planning and arranges for necessary home care and equipment
Occupational therapist
Helps restore function with daily living activities (i.e., dressing, bathing) and improve strength, coordination and cognition
Speech and language pathologist
Helps you improve cognition, speech and swallowing
Rehabilitation nurse
Provides direct care along with nurse assistants and helps implement skills taught in therapy into your day
Resident physician
Works with attending to provide care; training to be a physiatrist
Physical therapist
Helps you improve mobility, strength and balance, and decrease your pain
Vocational counselor
Helps you transition back to work or school
Art, music, and recreation therapist
Uses creative activities to help you get better
Dietitian
Determines dietary needs and teaches healthy food choices
Orthotist
Makes and fits braces and splints for people who need support for certain body parts
Prosthetist
Creates and fits artificial replacements for patients who are missing a limb

Types of Rehabilitation Therapies
We offer a variety of rehabilitation services to help you regain as much physical and cognitive function as possible so that you can get back to the things that matter to you. We also understand that an illness or injury likely impacts not only your physical or mental capabilities but your emotional health as well, so we also focus on mental well-being and provide coping strategies to use once home.
During an inpatient stay, patients may receive the following rehabilitation therapies:
- Art and music therapy
- Bedside hemodialysis
- Occupational therapy
- Onsite amputee rehabilitation
- PEG tube, Corpak feeding tube and total parenteral nutrition management
- Personalized nutrition therapy
- Physical therapy
- Recreational therapy
- Rehabilitation psychology
- Respiratory therapy
- Specialty physician care
- Speech therapy
- Ventilator and diaphragmatic pacer management
- Wound nurse specialist and wound VAC management
Visitor Information
- Visiting hours: 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. weekends and holidays
- Visitor parking: Located adjacent to the Old Brooklyn campus
- Onsite cafeteria: 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday through Friday
- Smoking: Prohibited anywhere in the hospital or on the grounds
- Furry friends: Welcome with prior approval from nursing

Admission Guidelines
To be admitted, you must meet the following guidelines:
- Age 13 years or older
- Ability to tolerate an intensive multidisciplinary rehabilitation program requiring at least two therapy disciplines and consisting of 15 therapy hours per week
- Need for medical oversight by a physiatrist
- Require 24-hour-care by a registered nurse with rehabilitation training for problems with bowel, bladder, pain, skin, safety, balance, behavior, communication or neurologic condition
- Potential to achieve significant improvement with rehabilitation care
