Why Choose a Baby-Friendly Hospital?

MetroHealth is verified by Baby-Friendly USA, meeting the highest standards for mother/baby care related to infant feeding.

Our staff is trained to:

  • Support breastfeeding families
  • Keep mothers and babies together as much as possible
  • Provide personalized feeding education

Healthy babies room-in at your bedside day and night, so you can learn newborn cues and gain confidence in feeding.

If challenges arise after you go home, we offer:

  • TLC (The Lactation Club) – Weekly in-person and virtual support groups
  • Breastfeeding Clinic – Appointments with Dr. Meaghan Combs or Dr. Magalie Bernardo

What to Expect at a Baby-Friendly Hospital

During Pregnancy

  • Respect & Support – We explain breastfeeding benefits and support your feeding choice.
  • Preparation – We help you plan for breastfeeding; partners are encouraged to participate.

Birth & First Days

  • Skin-to-Skin Care – Baby rests on your chest for at least an hour after birth (when safe), promoting bonding and breastfeeding success.
  • Expert Guidance – Our trained team helps with latching, feeding cues, milk supply, and safe formula preparation if needed.

Throughout Your Stay

  • Rooming-In – Baby stays in your room unless medically necessary to separate; nursery care is available if you need rest.
  • Breastfeeding Support – Specialists and nurses assist with feeding or pumping. We can help you access a breast pump through insurance or financial aid.

Going Home

  • Ongoing Support – We provide local resources for breastfeeding help after discharge.
  • TLC Support Group – Meets in person Mondays, virtually Wednesdays.
  • Breastfeeding Clinic – Appointments at Main Campus, Broadway or Brecksville locations.
  • WIC Program- Assistance from breastfeeding peers or a lactation consultant.
  • You’re Not Alone – We support you every step of the way.
