Emergency Medicine Reimagined: A Lifesaving Legacy, Renewed
Published on 12/01/2025
At MetroHealth’s Main Campus, the Emergency Department (ED) is more than a place – it’s a promise. A promise that no matter who you are, where you come from or what crisis brings you through our doors, you will receive expert, compassionate care. Every second. Every time.
Each year, more than 79,000 patients arrive at our Main Campus ED – by foot, by ambulance, by helicopter. For many, it’s the worst day of their lives. For our caregivers, it’s another opportunity to save more lives.
But while the care delivered inside our Emergency Department is among the best in the nation, the physical space has not kept pace. Built in 2004, the ED has not been renovated in over two decades – even as patient volumes have grown, technology has advanced, and the complexity of care has increased. That’s why MetroHealth is undertaking a transformative renovation, one that matches the excellence of our people with an environment designed for healing, innovation and dignity.

A FRONT DOOR TO LIFESAVING CARE
The Emergency Department is the front door to MetroHealth’s nationally recognized trauma, stroke, burn and cardiac care. It’s where approximately 80% of our hospital inpatients begin their journey. It’s where Cleveland EMS brings one in four patients. And it’s where our caregivers – recognized with the Lantern Award and the American College of Cardiology’s Platinum Achievement Award – deliver care that saves lives and restores hope.
Yet, the current space was built for a different time. Today’s demands require more: more room for patients and families, more privacy and flexibility and more support for the caregivers who give their all, every day.

Our Main Campus Emergency Department is where lives are saved and care begins for tens of thousands of patients each year. Your investment can bring us closer to creating a space that reflects the excellence of our clinical care – a space that supports healing, dignity and the humanity of every person who walks through our doors.
