What is Gynecologic Oncology?

Cancers that start in the female reproductive organs are the focus of gynecologic oncologists. These are cancers your doctor might find during a routine screening, or they are cancers you might find during a visit with a specialist.

Different types of gynecologic cancers may be treated in different ways, and we rely on a range of advanced therapies to meet your individual needs. At your first visit, your doctor will review your medical history, imaging and lab results, and pathology reports. Your doctor will also perform a physical exam and a pelvic exam. Using all of this information, your doctor will put together a personalized treatment plan designed to treat your cancer as effectively as possible.

Your treatment options may include:

• Surgery: Often we can perform minimally invasive surgeries—like robotic or laparoscopic surgery. That way you can recover faster and spend less time in the hospital.
• Chemotherapy: Anti-cancer drugs might be another option for your treatment.
• Radiation: Our doctors work closely with MetroHealth's specialized radiation oncologists to ensure that you receive the best care possible.
• Inclusion in clinical trials: We're focused on helping our patients gain access to the very latest gynecologic cancer treatments, including clinical trials. If there's a new therapy available that could prove beneficial for you, we'll always put that option on the table. MetroHealth Cancer Center is the only site in Ohio offering a phase II clinical trial evaluating a new form of immunotherapy for women with recurrent cervical cancer.
