What is monkeypox?

Monkeypox is an infection caused by a virus.  Many countries around the world, including the United States, are reporting increased numbers of cases this year.

How does it spread?

The virus spreads mostly through close, personal, contact with someone who has monkeypox.  Usually the contact is often skin-to-skin contact with an infected person. It is possible, but less likely, to spread the virus by touching items used by a person with monkeypox.

What are the symptoms?

Monkeypox causes a rash that can appear on any part of the body.  Some people also experience fevers, headaches, muscle aches, and swollen glands.

What should I do if I think I have monkeypox?

Depending on your symptoms, the nurse may schedule you for a visit to get tested.  When you come for a visit, please wear a face mask and cover your rash.

Are treatments for monkeypox available?

Antiviral medications may be recommended for certain people with a positive test for monkeypox, especially those with severe illness or who are at risk for severe illness.
