Champion of Philanthropy: Michael D

This July, The MetroHealth Foundation proudly honors Miroslav Dragutinovic, affectionately known as Michael D., as our Champion of Philanthropy – a new initiative recognizing colleagues who go above and beyond to support MetroHealth’s mission through advocacy, generosity and meaningful connections.

Michael D. is the Assistant Director of Plant Operations at MetroHealth’s Facilities Management Department. He’s also a connector, a problem-solver and a purpose-driven advocate for the people and mission of MetroHealth. After running his own successful HVAC business for a decade, Michael made a life-changing decision: to leave the private sector and join MetroHealth, seeking something more meaningful. “I wanted to be part of something bigger,” he said. “To help people who can’t help themselves.”

Since joining MetroHealth 15 years ago, Michael has become a trusted figure across the health system, known for his deep commitment to quality, safety and service. He oversees mechanical systems and plays a key role in construction planning. What sets him apart is his ability to build relationships with staff, contractors and vendors alike – and inspire them to give back.

Michael has cultivated a network of vendors who support MetroHealth through donations. “It’s not about writing a check,” he explains. “It’s about being part of the community.” One standout example: when a tribute to COVID-19 first responders was planned for the ambulance bay, Michael secured a donation of concrete – at no cost – because he believed in the project’s purpose.

His approach is simple but powerful: build trust, share the mission and lead with integrity. “If I call a vendor on a Saturday night because a chiller failed, they know I’m not just calling for me. I’m calling for our patients. And they show up.”

Michael’s impact extends beyond MetroHealth’s walls. He serves on external committees, including the Facility Guidelines Institute Outpatient Committee for Design and Construction. He is a board member of the Ohio Society for Health Care Facilities Management (OSHFM), a division of the Ohio Hospital Association, and a member of the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE). He is also a Certified Healthcare Facilities Manager.

Behind the scenes, Michael credits his wife of 29 years, Marija, as his “silent partner.” Her unwavering support allows him to dedicate long hours to MetroHealth’s mission. “She takes care of everything else so I can do this,” he says. “She’s definitely part of the team.”

Michael D.'s son, DejanTheir son, Dejan, also works at MetroHealth, proudly serving in the cafeteria on second shift. “My wife and I always pick him up from work at night,” Michael shares. “It’s one of the best parts of my day.”

When asked what this recognition means to him, Michael is humble: “I’d rather stay in the background and just do the work. But if this helps shine a light on what we can all do together, then I’m honored.”
