Program Components

Clinical Practice Rotations

• Acute Care 
• Inpatient Rehabilitation (includes Spinal Cord Injury, Stroke, and Traumatic Brain injury units)
• Outpatient Rehabilitation

Clinical practice will occur in acute care on specialized neurological floors/ICU, inpatient rehab specialized floors, and in outpatient neurological PT clinic. Residents will primarily serve patients with diagnoses of spinal cord injury, stroke, brain injury, and other neurological conditions. 

Focused Mentoring

Residents will be assigned a mentor in each rotation (acute/inpatient rehab/outpatient). Mentors provide feedback, facilitate resident self-reflection, and guide the resident in the pursuit of advanced clinical reasoning skills. Each mentor has specialized experience and continuing education in their specific practice area/interest. 

Curriculum

The program’s comprehensive curriculum is developed from and addresses the most recent version of the Neurologic Description of Residency Practice (DRP). The program also addresses the APTA’s Description of Specialty Practice for Neurology to prepare participants for the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) Neurologic Specialty Certification board exam. Didactic sessions may include lectures (in-person and/or web-based), independent learning (including assigned readings, web-based learning modules, etc.), hands-on lab sessions, and projects/assignments. The resident will also participate in research, teaching, and community outreach.
