Critical Care Pavilion

Description: Provide hospitality and wayfinding assistance to visitors and non-clinical support to patients on intensive care floors.
Volunteers Needed: Weekdays and weekends for three-hour shifts between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.
Commitment Required: 3 months
Minimum Age: 18
Location: MetroHealth Medical Center, Main Campus

Doula

Description: Provide emotional support and comfort measures to women during labor and delivery. Completion of doula training offered by Doulas of North America (DONA) is required.
Volunteers Needed: On call 
Commitment Required: 6 months. If volunteering to complete certification requirements, must attend a minimum of six births.

Emergency Department

Description: Round on patients and offer non-medical assistance to patients and families in MetroHealth’s Level I Trauma Center. This is not an observational experience.
Volunteers Needed: Weekdays and weekends for three-hour shifts between 8 a.m. - 11 p.m. (at Medical Center), 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. (other locations)
Commitment Required: 3 months 
Minimum Age: 18 and high school graduate

Hospitality Rounds

Description: Visit hospitalized patients. Offer comfort items such as playing cards, lip balm, puzzle books.
Volunteers Needed: Weekdays and weekends for two-hour shifts between 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. 
Commitment Required: 3 months

Loving Paws at MetroHealth

Description: Bring your dog to visit patients and families. Dogs must be certified through Therapy Dogs International or Pet Partners.
Volunteers Needed: Weekdays and weekends. One-hour shift.
Commitment Required: 6 months

New Baby Literacy Liaison

Description: Visit new parents to promote the importance of reading and distribute New Baby Literacy Kits and library cards. This service is presented in collaboration with the Cuyahoga County Public Library.
Volunteers Needed: Weekdays and weekends
Commitment Required: 6 months
Minimum Age: 18
Location: MetroHealth Medical Center, Main Campus

No One Dies Alone

Description: Provide a reassuring presence at the bedside of dying patients who would otherwise be alone at the end of life.
Volunteers Needed: On call

Pastoral Care

Description: Assist chaplains in meeting spiritual needs of patients of all faith backgrounds. Three roles are available:

  • Pastoral Visitor
  • Eucharistic Minister
  • Faith Tradition Pastoral Visitor

Volunteers Needed: Weekdays and weekends
Commitment Required: 6 months
Minimum Age: 18

Patient Safety Rounding

Note: This opportunity is currently full. We are not accepting new volunteers at this time.

Description: Visit hospitalized patients and explain safety measures to prevent falls.
Volunteers Needed: Weekday afternoons.
Commitment Required: 3 months
Minimum Age: 16
Location: MetroHealth Medical Center, Main Campus

Physical and Occupational Therapy - Inpatient

Description: Provide non-technical assistance as directed by therapist. Push patients in wheelchairs.
Volunteers Needed: Weekdays 9 a.m. - Noon or 1- 4 p.m.
Commitment Required: 3 months

Reiki

Description: In MetroHealth’s Hands to Heart Reiki Clinic, qualified volunteers offer Reiki appointments to patients and employees in need of a healing touch. Learn more about Reiki at MetroHealth.

Spirit of Music at MetroHealth

Description: Make music part of the healing process by sharing your vocal or instrumental talent with patients and visitors. A brief audition is required.

Surgery Center

Description: Greet patients and visitors in ambulatory surgery center. Escort patients to changing area. Round on patients in recovery.
Volunteers Needed: Weekdays 8:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.
