Service Chief: Stephen Tamarkin, MD
The department has five ATL 5000s, one ATL 3000 (breast), and one ATL Ultramark 9, including the Broadway Center, and a variety of broad-band transducers. Two Acuson Sequoia systems are used in the Breast Imaging Section.
Each of the ATL 5000s can perform Harmonic imaging which allows the machine to receive harmonic rather than the primary transmitted ultrasound frequency and eliminates common artifacts. The studies are all viewed and stored on our PACS system.
We provide ultrasound guidance for a variety of surgical procedures including brain, liver, and pancreas biopsies/resections, prostate radiation seed implantation, and various gynecologic procedures.
A variety of interventional procedures are performed under ultrasound guidance, including paracentesis, thoracentesis, abdominal organ biopsies, thyroid biopsies, abscess drainages, and catheter placements.
Ultrasound can be used to image the neonatal brain. This is especially useful for premature infants. Ultrasound can also be used to evaluate neonatal spines. Transcranial Doppler is a test that measures the velocity of blood flow through the brain’s blood vessels.
Ultrasound uses sound waves to image the fetus. There is no X-ray radiation involved. It is generally painless and takes approximately 45 minutes.
Ultrasound can be used to image superficial structures, such as the thyroid, breast, scrotum, and soft tissues.
Doppler utilizes sound waves to painlessly evaluate blood vessels for areas of obstruction or stenosis (vessel narrowing), and for detection of the direction or presence of flow.
The department is well equipped with state-of-the-art ultrasound systems able to perform color, 3D power and spectral Doppler.
Specialty Gynecologic Ultrasound Services-Transvaginal and Sonohysterography. Transvaginal ultrasound is when a special ultrasound transducer is inserted into the vagina allowing us to visualize some areas within the pelvis more clearly. Sonohysterography refers to placing a catheter into the uterine canal allowing saline to be infused during transvaginal ultrasound.
Education and Research
An ultrasound curriculum of didactic and case conferences is provided for the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program and Cross Sectional Imaging Fellows. We serve as a clinical training site for sonography students from Lorain County Community College and Cuyahoga County Community College.
The Ultrasound service is accredited through the American College of Radiology.
