OBJECTIVE: To provide an advanced opportunity for acquiring skills and training in the care of general surgical patients. Responsibilities will be near equivalent to those of a first year surgical house officer under the supervision of the attending surgical staff.
OFFERED: All months
STUDENTS: Maximum: 1 visiting medical student for each rotation
REQUIRED: Completion of core clerkships in Medicine and Surgery
DESCRIPTION: This opportunity is provided for the student who is interested in advanced training in surgery and may desire to pursue a surgical career. The student will be given responsibilities and have expectations commensurate with a first year surgical house officer. In this role, he/she will be given more responsibility than that of a clerkship student. One student can be accommodated each month. One position will be available on each of the general surgical services. This represents a full-time intensive commitment. The student will have significant responsibility for patients in the hospital and the outpatient department. Attempts will be made to provide increased technical skills. This rotation should provide an abundance of experience for students who wish to augment their skills in the care of surgical patients and will emphasize the application of basic scientific knowledge to clinical patient care.
