Child and Family Health Services Program

About the Child and Family Health Services (CFHS) Program

MetroHealth Center for Community Health is the Title V Maternal and Child Health (Child and Family Health Services Program) grantee for Cuyahoga County. Through the Child and Family Health Services grant and third-party income funding, MetroHealth Medical Center has been able to provide a neighborhood-based maternal/child health program since 1965.

The MetroHealth System also supplements this funding with in-kind support. The Child and Family Health Services Program (formerly Maternity & Infant Health Care Program) was the centerpiece program in MetroHealth's successful application for the prestigious Foster McGaw Prize.

History of CFHS

In 1963, a mandate was established through an amendment to the Social Security Act for the Children's Bureau of the Department of Health and Human Services to establish two Maternity and Infant Care Projects in each state. MetroHealth Medical Center's Child and Family Health Services Program (formerly M & I) has been serving the needs of the Cleveland/Cuyahoga County community since 1965. The mission of the Child and Family Health Services Program is to prevent infant and childhood mortality and morbidity. This goal is realized daily by promoting the availability and accessibility of preventative and clinical public health services.

Services Offered

The Child and Family Health Services Program had focused primarily mothers and children, but progressively expanded to a comprehensive model.

In 2004, The Child and Family Health Services Program served 1,637 patients and provided 8,100 clinic visits to the target population, focusing on perinatal and pediatric care. In addition to direct clinical services, the Child and Family Health Services Program provides a variety of community outreach and health education services, it also provides community health assessment and planning activities.

The Child and Family Health Services Program also supports several special projects focusing on the prevention of second teenage pregnancy, service coordination, and enhanced health education and outreach in collaboration with managed care.
