Critical Care (PICU)

Pediatric Respiratory Therapy

The MetroHealth Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) offers highly trained specialists to care for critically ill or injured infants, children and adolescents in a state-of-the-art environment.

The MetroHealth PICU is the only pediatric critical care unit on Cleveland’s west side.  It offers the advanced services of a pediatric hospital in a more personal setting.

Each year, more than 700 critically ill and injured children (ages newborn to 21) are admitted to the PICU at MetroHealth. Because of MetroHealth's renowned trauma center, a number of these children have suffered traumatic injuries. However, the PICU cares for all critically ill children, like children with severe asthma, severe respiratory illnesses, diabetes, shock and other life-threatening conditions.

All children admitted to the PICU are cared for by board-certified pediatric critical care specialists. In addition, specialists from a broad range of areas, including surgery, cardiology, infectious diseases, gastroenterology, can be called to help care for our PICU patients.
