Food Allergy Facts

  • Cow’s milk, soy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, and shell fish are the most common causes of food allergies
  • Nut allergies affect 1.3 percent of the population, and about 20 percent of nut allergy reactions are anaphylactic
  • Food allergies cause 150-200 fatalities per year
  • The prevalence of food allergies has nearly doubled since the year 2000
  • Food allergies account for about 35 percent of all cases of anaphylactic shock
  • About 3 percent of all adults have food allergies
  • About 6 percent of children under the ages of three years old have food allergies
  • Up to 3 million children in the United States have peanut, tree nut, or combined food allergies
