Susan G. Komen Northeast Ohio Awards Grant To BREAST/Amigas
/Amigas program received the largest of 10 grants announced by Susan G. Komen Northeast Ohio Monday
, totaling $117,195.
“We are extremely thankful to Komen Northeast Ohio for funding the BREAST/Amigas program,” said Luz Oyola, Manager of BREAST/Amigas. “Thanks to the funds, we have been able to not only screen thousands of women, but more importantly, empower women to take charge of their own health. Screening and education are vital for a healthier community.”
Susan G. Komen Northeast Ohio has supported MetroHealth’s BREAST/Amigas program since 2005, helping educate more than 30,000 women about breast health and screening more than 5,300 women. Through the work of BREAST/Amigas, 21 women have been diagnosed with breast cancer, 75 percent of which were detected at an early stage.
This past year, BREAST/Amigas attended 67 community events, providing education, free mammograms, free follow-ups for abnormal exams and other health screenings for the uninsured and underinsured. While MetroHealth physicians serve as volunteers at these events, the grant money pays for patient navigators.
“We have been a longtime partner with the BREAST/Amigas program at MetroHealth,” said Sean Shacklett, Executive Director of Susan G. Komen Northeast Ohio. “That program has been so successful for so long. Year in and year out, they produce great results in reaching the target populations that we have. They have that trust in the community.”
