Duchenne muscular dystrophy is caused by a gene alteration and is marked by a loss of muscle function and weakness. It affects approximately one in 3,500 male births worldwide, with symptoms usually appearing before age six. The lower limbs are the first to be impaired, and by age 12, most affected boys become wheelchair dependent. By 18, an enlarged heart (cardiomyopathy) usually follows. Duchenne muscular dystrophy has no cure, but various therapies and approaches can lead to a better quality of life.
