MetroHealth Care Plus Medicaid Waiver Extended Through April 2014
(Cleveland) – The MetroHealth System has been notified by the State of Ohio and the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) that the MetroHealth Care Plus Medicaid Demonstration has been extended through April 30, 2014. The program had been scheduled to end on December 31, 2013, but at the request of MetroHealth, CMS and the State of Ohio extended the MetroHealth Care Plus Medicaid Demonstration to ensure a smooth transition of beneficiaries into the State’s newly expanded Medicaid program in 2014.
MetroHealth Care Plus, a 1115 Medicaid Demonstration project, was the only project in Ohio designed to provide health care coverage for up to 30,000 uninsured adults in Cuyahoga County prior to a statewide expansion of Medicaid. It was designed to provide the high-quality services people needed to improve and maintain their health, while also reducing health care spending. MetroHealth enrolled 28,294 Cuyahoga County adults to receive services from MetroHealth and a network of community providers.
“We are grateful to CMS, and the State of Ohio’s Department of Medicaid for providing this important extension so that MetroHealth Care Plus beneficiaries will avoid a lapse in health care coverage while we actively assist them in transitioning that coverage to Ohio’s Medicaid program,” said Akram Boutros, MD, FACHE, President and CEO of The MetroHealth System. He added, “MetroHealth is also grateful to the Cuyahoga County government and taxpayers for providing the local financing for this innovative program.”
MetroHealth will notify MetroHealth Care Plus enrollees regarding the extension and will inform them that they may be eligible for a more comprehensive health care benefit package under the State of Ohio’s Medicaid program beginning January 1, 2014. Current MetroHealth Care Plus enrollees are not required to take any action to transition their health care coverage to the Ohio Medicaid program.
MetroHealth will no longer enroll new individuals in the MetroHealth Care Plus Demonstration. New enrollees can apply for benefits now at http://www.benefits.ohio.gov or they can schedule an appointment with a MetroHealth Financial Counselor who will assist them in completing a Medicaid application prior to April 30, 2014.
