Department of Medicine
The Case Department of Medicine blends the newest technology with patient-focused care provided by highly trained nationally renowned staff in every subspecialty of medicine. The divisions and clinical centers are listed on the Patient Care page. We welcome patients who seek a primary care physician, desire consultation with a specialist or want access to the highest possible quality of care.
Addressing the Social Determinants of Health
Improving the health of the community is the core of MetroHealth’s mission. Part of that means continuing to deliver excellent medical care across the continuum of care – primary care, specialty medical and surgical care, hospital care and, when needed, life-saving interventions – all empowered by the latest technology and enhanced by our expertise in population health, managed care and quality improvement.
But we must also expand the reach of our care. We need to see the full picture of our patients and their lives, beyond our walls, so we can identify and help eliminate potential barriers to their health and well-being. We must find and fix the root causes of health disparities in our region.
That’s why MetroHealth's Population Health Innovation Institute created and launched the Institute for H.O.P.E.™, to help improve health through opportunity, partnership and empowerment.
Education
MetroHealth has been an academic medical center affiliate of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine since 1917. All faculty in the Department of Medicine have appointments on the faculty of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
At any given time, approximately 36 percent of the Case third and fourth year medical students are on the MetroHealth Campus getting clinical training and experience. The Department of Medicine provides clinical clerkships, acting internships and opportunities for rotations in all subspecialties.
Continuing Medical Education
Our CME Program provides a variety of high quality educational activities that support, facilitate, and expand the knowledge of developments and research while keeping our staff up-to-date on medical standards and technical advances.
Graduate Medical Education
The Department of Medicine has many accredited fellowship programs, including Anesthesiology, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Internal Medicine, Internal Med-Peds, Pulmonary, Critical Care, Nephrology, Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Rheumatology and more.

Nursing and APRN Programs
MetroHealth is one of the few public hospitals nationwide to earn Magnet re-designation. We currently employ over 250 APRNs. For more details, see Nursing at MetroHealth and Advanced Practice Registered Nursing Education.
Research
MetroHealth has strong basic and clinical research programs. Currently, MetroHealth has more than $100 million in active research grants. Most funding comes through federal agencies, including the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense. Our research programs include MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute, Population Health Research Institute, and Emergency Care Research Institute.
The MetroHealth Simulation Center
The MetroHealth Simulation Center (MHSC) has grown rapidly since its inception in 2012. It is now a thriving hub of activity - an interdisciplinary training facility committed to the MetroHealth mission by providing innovative education and training leading to outstanding healthcare for our patients.
