Driver Rehabilitation Program

MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio

The ability to drive a motor vehicle is an important source of independence. Whether the destination is a job, the grocery store or enjoying social activities, driving provides a sense of freedom that we rely on for everyday living. For a person with a disability or medical condition, this type of independence or freedom may seem out of reach. The Driver Rehabilitation Program at MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio provides the necessary steps to begin or resume driving. This program provides a thorough assessment, individualized treatment and appropriate education for people with conditions that may affect their ability to drive safely.

Who would benefit from the Driver Rehabilitation Program?

New and experienced drivers with physical and / or cognitive impairments resulting from trauma, illness or medical condition; examples include:

  • Brain Injury
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Stroke
  • Dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Amputation
  • Orthopaedic Impairment
  • Visual Impairment
  • Peripheral Nerve Injury

What are the benefits and services of the program?

Driver Evaluation
An in-depth clinical evaluation of vision, cognitive/perceptual skills, physical abilities and an on-road, behind-the-wheel evaluation to assess
the individual’s potential to begin or resume safe and independent driving
Driver Rehabilitation
Address specific impairments, areas of concern or training with required adaptive equipment identified during the evaluation
Vehicle modification Consultation
Provide an individualized plan for specific vehicle modification if necessary

Who performs the evaluations?

A MetroHealth Occupational Therapist, who is also a certified driver rehabilitation specialist licensed by the Ohio Department of Public Safety, provides all services.

What is the process if training is necessary?

• An individualized plan for on-road, behind-the-wheel training
• Rehabilitation to address problem areas identified during the evaluation
• Education on the use of adaptive equipment if necessary, to ensure that you have the skills needed to safely and effectively operate a vehicle.

This process occurs in a training vehicle provided by The Driver Rehabilitation Program. Vehicle modifications may be recommended by your driving specialist, to include accelerator, brake or steering control devices, wheelchair or scooter handling options, etc.

What is required to participate in the training?

Participants must meet the following criteria before scheduling an appointment:
• Must be at least 18 years old
• Possess a valid driver’s license or temporary permit
• Participants must be seizure-free for the last year
• A physician’s referral or prescription for a Driver Evaluation and Rehabilitation program accompanied with medical history is required

Will this program be covered by insurance?

All insurance policies are different; however, we will work with you to verify coverage or determine payment options.

The Driver Rehabilitation Program at The MetroHealth Institute of Ohio has been helping individuals with disabilities begin or return to safe driving since 1990. Our team of experts works closely with each individual to ensure success. Upon completion of the program, if necessary, your driving specialist will accompany you to an Ohio driver’s license exam station to obtain your license or have restrictions added if adaptive driving equipment is required.
