OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the applicability of genetics to clinical medicine, and to train the student in the basic principles of human genetics.

REQUIRED: Completion of core clerkships in Medicine, Pediatrics and Obstetrics
DESCRIPTION: The student will participate in the Genetics Clinics in the diagnostic evaluation of patients, and in genetic counseling. The referrals to the clinic represent a broad spectrum of human genetic problems and include antenatal diagnosis. Clinics meet three times a week. The inter-clinical periods are utilized for library research related to the clinical problems presented by the patients, inpatient consultations and ward rounds with the preceptor, plus laboratory exposure in cytogenetics and biochemical genetics. Students with special interest in genetics may arrange an extended elective, which includes a research component.
NOTE: Student interview required before elective
DUTIES: Primary contact with patients under supervision of preceptor.
