The Children's Hospital at MetroHealth Medical Center

MetroHealth Medical Center is a 731-bed academic facility, affiliated with Case Western Reserve University (CASE). MetroHealth mission is to provide the highest level of primary and tertiary care to the Cleveland community and Northeast Ohio, to provide excellence in training and educational programs, and to be a center for cutting edge research in basic science and clinical medicine. MetroHealth also includes a major inpatient rehabilitation institute, the nation’s second busiest areomedical helicopter program and expansive outpatient plaza. A major renovation and expansion of the emergency care and outpatient surgery areas are the most recent addition to The MetroHealth System.

The Children’s Hospital at MetroHealth Medical Center is one of the largest providers of health care to infants, children, and adolescents in the Cleveland area. More than 50 faculty members supervise residents, medical students and other health professionals in serving more than 3,000 inpatient admissions and over 55,000 outpatient visits annually.

As a major pediatric center, inpatient services are provided through two general pediatric units totaling 57 beds; a 10-bed Level I Pediatric Intensive Care Unit; two nurseries totaling 48 bassinets and a newly renovated state-of-the-art, 49 bed Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The Children’s Hospital includes a Level I Trauma center and emergency department; the region’s only Level I burn center; the region’s only Level I pediatric trauma service and intensive care unit. The Children’s Hospital at MetroHealth Medical Center also serve as the muscular dystrophy center for Northeastern Ohio.

The Ambulatory Division of Pediatrics provides its services at the recently constructed Women's and Children's Pavilion in the Outpatient Plaza along with continuity care, and pediatric subspecialties clinics. Sick patients requiring same day appointments are seen at the Urgent Care Clinic and are managed by the pediatric faculty along with residents. Residents build up their longitudinal experience with patients and families at the Continuity Clinic supervised by the same faculty team leader every week. In addition, there are appointment clinics conducted by the faculty, including some evenings and Saturdays to suit the needs of working parents. There is also an Open Access Clinic that provides same day appointment for patients to see faculty.

All pediatric specialties conduct their clinics in the pediatrics outpatient section. Pulmonology Services include Pediatric Pulmnology clinics and Asthma clinics for children, where a wide array of Pediatric Pulmonology problems are managed. The Comprehensive Care Division of Pediatrics is devoted to the care of children with mental and physical handicaps, developmental delay, degenerative disorders of the brain and syndromic patients, in a multidisciplinary manner approach, assisted by a social worker. The Adolescent Pediatrics Division, the oldest of its kind in Cleveland, offers care to teenagers on diverse issues by a team comprising of three board certified adolescent specialists, and teen counselors who specialize in issues specific to adolescents up to the age of 25.  The Pediatric Neurology Division in addition to managing the different neurologic dilemmas in their pediatric patients also conducts a spasticity clinic and a muscle clinic. These clinics also are multidisciplinary in approach and include physiatrists, pulmonologists, cardiologists, geneticists and social workers, for a thorough evaluation of the patient and for planning a comprehensive management plan, and providing assistance, all in one visit. The Neonatology Division at MetroHealth Medical Center with its state-of-the-art neonatology unit is a major center managing the sickest neonates. With its huge patient population and variety of medical and surgical conditions managed, it offers an exclusive experience for the residents and fellows in training. The Genetics Division in Pediatrics provides consultation services for adult, prenatal and perinatal patients, and evaluation and management of metabolic diseases. The Center for the Advancement of Mothers and Children is a multidisciplinary clinic within MetroHealth’s Center for Community Health that provides cost effective quality care to families experiencing chemical dependency or other high risk factors. This Center integrates interdisciplinary services for at-risk families through pediatric health care, chemical dependency/mental health assessments, family counseling and developmental services. One of the unique aspects of the Pediatrics Department that exhibits Child Advocacy, is the Family Advocacy Program. It is one of the first in the United States and the only such program in Ohio, bringing on-site legal services to the patients and families in collaboration with the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland.

Residents work along with attending physicians, psychologists, fellows, nurse practitioners, pediatric nurses, social workers and child life workers in providing care for pediatric patients and their families. At Metrohealth we believe that pediatric education is enhanced by a coordinated approach to patient care integrating faculty, residents and a talented array of various health care professionals. Faculty provides close supervision and guidance in an atmosphere, which preserves resident autonomy.

MetroHealth has a key roles in leading pediatric research through its state-of-art Charles H. Rammelkamp, Jr., M.D., Center for Education and Research  where the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics of CASE is located. We annually perform over $20 million of active research on site. The Children Hospital at MetroHealth boasts the region’s only Nobel Prize winner for pediatrics research achievements by Dr.Frederick C. Robbins.
