Orthopaedics (Bones)
For more than one and a half centuries the MetroHealth System has made
significant contributions in the treatment of injury and disease. The Department
of Orthopaedic Surgery is a part of the legacy, providing leadership in the
fields of musculoskeletal trauma, hand surgery, and the treatment of spinal
disorders. We are proud of our history, and we are committed to the future of
orthopaedic surgery. Our vision is to continue to provide excellent clinical
care, serving as a model for other centers, and to engage in research and the
development of new technology to help our patients reach new levels of function
and recovery.
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at MetroHealth provides a full rage of
musculoskeletal services, caring for more than 25,000 people and performing
approximately 3,000 procedures annually. Each surgeon is board certified and
fellowship trained and is an expert in an area of orthopaedic subspecialty, such
as trauma, pediatrics, spine, or hand and upper extremity surgery.
We are equally dedicated to musculoskeletal education. We actively
participate in residency training, including the Case School of Medicine
Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and other local programs. The Department also
sponsors fellowships in spine surgery, hand and upper extremity surgery, and
traumatology. Our Orthopaedic Learning Center is a modern library, complete with
textbooks, journals, Internet access, a multi-media presentation center, and
other educational materials. Through the OLC, we have developed a unique
web-based system which delivers high quality, professional educational materials
to physicians.
Vision Statement
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in the MetroHealth System, Case School
of Medicine seeks to be a nationally recognized leader in the disciplines of
trauma, spine and hand and upper extremity surgery. The Department will pursue
national recognition in these specific areas through focused investment in
research, education and clinical care. The vision includes the establishment of
research programs that are integrated with clinical care, the development of
specialized centers that are structured along a continuum of care to provide
seamless service and the integration of clinical operations within the
management of the Department to improve efficiency and develop resources to
support the academic agenda. The vision entails “centers of excellence” in areas
that represent the core competencies within the Department. The development of a
Hand Center, a Spine Center and a Center for Injury Control and Management are
key success factors. These Centers will be heavily invested in outcomes
measurement, will be models for collaborative research in emerging technologies,
will expand the geographic presence of the Department and will be viewed as best
practice for delivering care in an academic medical center.
The Department is highly committed to the mission of the
MetroHealth System. Clinical care related to the needs in the community for
orthopaedic surgery and to the patients who seek care in the MetroHealth System
will be achieved through the capacity created by the investment in core service
lines. The Department will continue to expand its capacity for general
orthopaedic surgery as the Centers expand and support further growth.
