Neonatology
Outpatient Follow-up Services (Special Care Clinic)
The Special Care Developmental Follow-Up Clinic (SCC) serves the many outpatient needs of our high-risk graduates — babies that were cared for in the NICU and have since been discharged — as well as patients from outside institutions on a consultation basis.
Common diagnoses of SCC patients include:
- A birth weight of less than 1500 grams (also called Very Low Birth Weight/VLBW babies)
- Cranial abnormalities such as intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) or periventricular leukomalacia (PVL)
- Chronic lung disease (requiring home oxygen therapy)
- Extensive resuscitation at birth
- Pulmonary hypertension
- Apnea of prematurity discharged on home cardiorespiratory monitors
- At-risk for developmental delays
One-Stop Care
The SCC is staffed by board-certified neonatologists, neonatology fellows, a neonatology nutritionist, nursing staff, physical and occupational therapists, social workers and home monitor technicians.
This multi-disciplinary approach allows the MetroHealth team to deal with a broad range of medical and social issues for the patients and their families.
The SCC team works with a patient’s primary care physician and other providers and specialists, such cardiologists, ophthalmologists and others.
Make an Appointment
Patients are scheduled into the SCC at the time of their discharge from the NICU.
