Pathology
Medical Laboratory Technician Program
Medical laboratory technicians are laboratory scientists who are part of the
medical team of specialists that work together to determine the presence, extent
or absence of disease. They do this by performing a full range of laboratory
tests from simple blood screens to more complex tests to detect diseases such as
cancer, coronary artery disease, and diabetes.
In conjunction with Cuyahoga Community College, medical technician students
are given the opportunity to complete a clinical internship at MetroHealth
Medical Center. This internship is comprised of five rotations in each of the
following disciplines of clinical laboratory science:
- Chemistry
- Immunology
- Transfusion Medicine
- Microbiology
- Hematology
The students work under the supervision of a practicing medical technologist
to apply the theoretical knowledge and laboratory skills learned in the academic
setting to the clinical setting. Upon graduation with an associate degree, and
passing the Clinical Board Registry, the student receives certification as a
medical laboratory technician under the American Society of Clinical
Pathologists (ASCP). See link below for additional information.
