STUDY

DIAGNOSIS

COURSE OF STUDY

ProCESS

Suspected Sepsis

The objective is to improve the management of septic shock by comparing two alternative resuscitation strategies, Early Goal Directed Therapy (EGDT) and Protocolized Standard Care (PSC) to usual care.  Management includes use of fluids, vasopressors, PRBC's , inotropes and CVP monitoring based on which arm pt. is randomized to.

ED treatment period ~6 hours from randomization.

Drug Interactions in Patients on warfarin

Supratherapeutic INR

6 Question survey completed with patient

Levalbuterol

Acute Asthma Exacerbation

We treat pts. with 3 levalbuterol nebs with either saline or atrovent (this is a double blind study).  We also obtain VS, lab work, FEV1 readings throughout course of txs.

MN-221

Asthma

Acute Asthma Exacerbation

Evaluating safety and efficacy of an investigational new drug (beta adrenergic receptor agonist) given as a single IV infusion.  This is a single-blind study and patient may receive placebo.

Patient ED treatment period lasts ~5 hours.

MI-CP 186

Acute Asthma Exacerbation

Evaluating the safety and efficacy of an investigational new drug, MEDI-563, (Anti-Interleukin-5 Receptor Alpha Monoclonal Antibody) given as two infusions-one in the ED and one at Week 12.  This is a double blind study and patient may receive placebo.

ED treatment period lasts 3-4 hours from randomization.

CLUE

Acute HTN

Comparing Cardene IV vs. Labetalol for the treatment of acute hypertension.

ED treatment period ~30-60 minutes from randomization.

PRONTO

Acute HTN

+

CHF diagnosis

Evaluating the safety and efficacy of an IV infusion of clevidipine with SOC IV antihypertensives in patients with HTN and acute heart failure.

Fentanyl vs. Morphine

Trauma patients transported by Life Flight

Efficacy and Adverse Events of Morphine vs. Fentanyl in an Aeromedical Setting

Ultrasound in Pneumothorax

Trauma patients transported by Life Flight with suspected ptx

Effect of portable ultrasound use to evaluate trauma patients for trauma patients in pre-hospital environment.

HIV Testing Attitudes

ED patients and staff

Evaluating patient and staff attitudes regarding rapid testing of HIV in the Emergency Department.

Thoracic Ultrasound in Pneumothorax

Patients with normal lung parenchyma on CT chest

Evaluating the effects of transducer type on the sonographic appearance of thoracic artifacts used in the detection of pneumothorax.

Ultrasound measurement of IVC

Septic patients

Evaluating correlation of IVC diameter as measured by ultrasound and CVP measured by traditional means in septic shock.

Evaluation of the efficiency of TIA workups in the observation setting.

TIA patient admitted to the CDU

A retrospective chart review of the efficiency of diagnostic testing in the evaluation of TIA in the observation setting.

Retrospective evaluation of ABCD score after TIA

TIA

Retrospective evaluation of the Oxford ABCD score for evaluation of TIA in an emergency department population.

Thoracotomy and Trauma

Evaluating injuries causing death in patients who underwent thoracotomy following significant thoracic trauma.
