Department of Medicine Application Process

Application Process

MetroHealth utilizes the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) and participates in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) as well as the National Matching Services Post Doctoral Dental Matching Program and Post Doctoral Application Support System (PASS).

Program Requirements:

  • USMLE Score: 85+ on both USMLE 1 & 2 achieved on first attempt  
  • Letters of Recommendation: Three letters are required
  • ECFMG Certificate: Not before applying
  • Experience: More than two months of US, UK, or Canadian Clinical Experience within the last year including a recommendation letter from that experience. Observerships/Externships/Research do not apply as Clinical Experience.
  • Medical School Graduation Date: Within the last 10 years

All applications are reviewed in ERAS and must include the application form, three or more letters of recommendation, Dean’s letter, Medical School Transcript, and USMLE scores.  Personal interviews are by invitation only and are based on the applicant's academic performance as posted in ERAS.  Interviews are conducted on selected dates between November and the last week of January. If selected for an interview, applicants will be notified by e-mail.  

Individual Fellowship programs use ERAS or their own applications. Refer to the specific department web site for further information.

All U.S. graduates must use ERAS to apply for the accredited residency programs at MetroHealth and must participate in the NRMP to be eligible for a training slot.

Residents with one of the following qualifications may be considered for appointment to sponsored programs at the  MetroHealth Medical Center:

  • Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the LCME (Liaison Committee on Medical Education)
  • Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the AOA (American Osteopathic Association)
  • Graduates of medical schools outside the US and Canada who meet one of the following qualifications:
    • Have a valid certificate from the ECFMG or have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. licensing jurisdiction
    • Graduates of medical schools outside the U.S. who have completed a Fifth Pathway Program provided by a LCME accredited medical school
    • Graduates of dental schools accredited by the ADA

All appointments are subject to final approval by the Board of Trustees.
