Department of Medicine Internal Medicine Residency Program

The MetroHealth Medical Center is an outstanding academic medical center and major affiliate of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine since 1914. The primary goal of our program is to provide residents with a well-rounded education and clinical experience in a friendly and enthusiastic academic environment. We pride ourselves on our excellent state-of-the-art patient care as well as our family-oriented residency program.

The MetroHealth Medical Center, Cleveland's first hospital, was founded in 1837 as City Hospital. From our inception to our status today as a world-class hospital system, MetroHealth has evolved to meet changing health care and social needs. In 1891, a group of twenty-eight (28) physicians and surgeons formed the first medical staff of City Hospital. During this time, the hospital became a training school for medical students. The MetroHealth Medical Center has been a primary teaching hospital of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine since 1914.

From our humble beginnings, The MetroHealth System has emerged as a full-service tertiary referral center and level 1 trauma center capable of providing high quality care for both routine medical problems and life-threatening conditions. We provide more services to more people than any ever before and have a proud tradition of influential research, high quality health care and outstanding training in academic and clinical hospital.
