MetroHealth has been a primary teaching hospital of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine since 1917. All faculty in the Department of Medicine have appointments on the faculty of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
Medical Student Education
At any given time, approximately 36% of the Case third and fourth year medical students are on the MetroHealth Campus getting clinical training and experience. The Department of Medicine does a disproportionate share of the teaching in the first and second years of medical school training. Faculty in the Department of Medicine run ten of the preclinical courses at the School of Medicine. A recent audit estimated that about 30% of the teaching of the first and second year Case medical students was done by faculty in the Department of Medicine at MetroHealth.
Internal Medicine Residency Training
MetroHealth has an excellent reputation nationally for its Internal Medicine Residency Program. Over 1200 physicians have graduated from MetroHealth’s Internal Medicine Residency in the last 50 years. MetroHealth has a tradition of preparing physicians for acceptance into the most competitive fellowship programs. We pride ourselves on training future leaders in academic and clinical medicine.
Fellowship Training
The department of Medicine has accredited fellowship programs in Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Pulmonary, Critical Care, Nephrology, Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Hospice and Palliative Care, and Rheumatology.
