Tips for Cold and Flu Care
Sick with a bad cold or the flu? Use these tips to take care of yourself or a family member.
- Drink plenty of fluids to hydrate. If you have been vomiting, be sure to sip fluids slowly. If you’ve experienced diarrhea, you may need even more fluids, but avoid sugary beverages as this could worsen the problem.
- Take non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS) such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen for fever and aches. Note: Check with your doctor before taking any medications.
- Eat foods as tolerated. Clear broths (such as chicken soup) are good. Avoid fried, fatty, spicy and heavily sweetened foods.
- Get plenty of rest.
- Saline nasal spray and drops may help with nasal congestion. A warm shower, bath or beverages can also help loosen nasal congestion.
- If you have a sore throat, fluids, lozenges, sugar-free hard candy and over the counter throat sprays can be soothing.
