MetroHealth Medical Center delivers more than 3,500 babies every year and manages approximately 4,500 women with pregnancy-related conditions each year. Our Level III Labor and Delivery Unit handles some of the most complicated pregnancies in Northeastern Ohio. Our Perinatal Center is well recognized as being experts in the areas of Genetics, Fetal Ultrasound, Diabetes in Pregnancy, and various other medical complications. In addition, the Obstetrical Service employs a group of Generalists who provide prenatal through postnatal care with a family-centered approach. Through a collaborative approach with the highly skilled nursing service, the birthing experience becomes a memorable experience for the entire family.

Birthing Suites
MetroHealth’s Labor and Delivery Unit is comprised of nine state-of-the-art birthing suites with the capabilities of allowing a woman to labor and deliver her baby in the same room. The spacious rooms promote a family-centered approach allowing adequate privacy at all times. Each birthing room is designed with the most progressive fetal monitoring technology and neonatal resuscitation equipment. In addition, there is an obstetrician, anesthesiologist, and pediatrician readily accessible 24 hours a day.
Childbirth Education Classes
MetroHealth offers a variety of classes to help families prepare for the birth of a new child.
Our Early Pregnancy Classes offer key information for the expectant woman in her first months of pregnancy. These classes include information on the following areas:
- Nutrition
- Physical and Emotional Changes of Pregnancy
- Danger Signs (When to Call the Doctor)
- Prenatal Tests
Childbirth Education classes at MetroHealth offer information for prepared childbirth. Topics include:
- Stages of Labor
- Comfort Choices (Pain Management)
- Birth and Delivery
- Newborn Care
- Tour of the Labor and Delivery and Postpartum units)
Additional classes offered to expectant mothers and their families include the following topics:
- Breastfeeding
- Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC)
- Siblings (for big brothers and big sisters)

High-Risk Specialty
Located in the Labor and Delivery Unit are five High-Risk Suites, designed for the complicated pregnancy which requires close observation. These private rooms are designed for monitoring pre-term labor, pregnancy-induced hypertension, and other medical complications of pregnancy. A collaborative approach utilizing perinatologists, neonatologists, anesthesia, medical specialists and nursing assist in providing the most optimum outcome for the high-risk pregnancy.
Postpartum (After Delivery)
Our postpartum floor has been completely remodeled to provide maximum comfort and privacy during the hospital stay. Private rooms are available and every room has its own shower and bath facilities. With the focus being on newborn bonding, mothers have the option to participate in their infant's care around the clock. Flexible visiting hours provide fathers, grandparents and siblings the opportunity to share in the arrival of the newborn. Experts in breast feeding and infant care are part of our staff for both the new mother and the experienced mother.
